What You'll Need
- A tape measure or flexible measuring tape
- A ruler or vernier caliper for belt width
- The old belt (if available)
- Pen and paper to record the measurements
Measure the Belt Length
If the old belt is still intact, lay it on a flat surface and measure around its entire circumference using a flexible tape measure.
If the belt has snapped, place the two ends together and measure the full length from end to end.
Remember that worn belts often stretch over time, so the measured length may be slightly longer than the original specification.
Measure the Belt Width
Measure across the widest part of the belt. Lawn mower belts are commonly available in several widths, so even a small difference can prevent the belt from fitting correctly.
Always measure the top width rather than the base of the belt.
Identify the Belt Profile
Replacement belts are available in several profiles, including standard V-belts, cogged V-belts and Kevlar reinforced belts. The profile is just as important as the length and width.
If you're unsure which profile you need, compare the old belt with the replacement specification or search using your mower model.
Use Your Mower Model Whenever Possible
Although measuring a belt is useful, the most accurate way to identify a replacement is by using your lawn mower's model number or the original OEM belt part number. Manufacturers design each machine to use specific belt dimensions and profiles.
If the identification label is still present on your mower, searching by model number will usually provide the fastest and most accurate result.
Can You Measure Without the Old Belt?
Yes. If the original belt is missing, you can often measure the belt routing around the pulleys using a piece of string. Mark where the string meets, measure its length and use this as a guide when selecting a replacement belt.
This method provides an estimate, but searching by mower model or OEM part number remains the most reliable approach.
